After writing about family walks and leading ‘Walking for Softies’ outings Pete Blench heads for the hills on a challenging journey of discovery.

Hoisting on a backpack, he sets off to explore the old byways, historic sites and remote backwaters of Herefordshire – leading the reader through the county’s history and folklore on the way. His journey follows the 154-mile Herefordshire Trail, passing through the market towns of Leominster, Kington, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury and Bromyard; a landscape of orchards, woody dingles filled with birdsong, hollow-ways, wending river valleys and borderland views to the Welsh mountains.

While celebrating the joys of the trail, the author gives a candid account of the difficulties he faced – atrocious weather,  vanishing paths and thorny thickets – and his doubts about coping on a long-dreamt-of venture at seventy-plus. Has he left it too late?

Steeped in local detail and full of curiosity, the book offers an inspirational and often surprising tour around a beautiful and little-known part of Britain.

Pete Blench is a walker and narrator of local history who leads heritage walks and compiles walking guides.
