Shrewsbury is one of the best preserved medieval towns in England. Over the last half-century, a wealth of archaeological discoveries has led to an increasingly rich and detailed understanding of the town’s past.
Recent excavations – including ‘Rescue archaeology’ digs carried out in advance of new development – have unearthed new information about previously unexplored parts of the town and the castle. This book, written by a leading archaeologist involved in excavations throughout Shrewsbury since 1978, presents a summary of what has been uncovered, and what this tells us about the story of an extraordinary medieval town.
Nigel Baker is an archaeologist with decades of experience working on Shrewsbury and other towns in western England; he is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham.
