The Hereford Gospels is the oldest manuscript in Hereford Cathedral’s Chained Library. Dating from c. AD 800, it affords rare glimpses of the earliest days of the Diocese, as the Christian faith grew in the Hereford area.
This book tells the story of the manuscript – of how and why it was made and used, and the context of its creation. New research has revealed that an even earlier manuscript was overwritten in order to make it, the older text still there in its pages.
The book accompanies an exhibition on the Hereford Gospels at the Cathedral, and marks the 1,350th anniversary of the Diocese.
