Description

A Brush with the Borders is a beautifully illustrated book by artist Kathryn Moore following her year as Artist in Residence at Hergest Croft Gardens. The unfolding seasons, drawn and painted in sketchbooks, depict the flora and fauna of the gardens, along with observations of natural history, discussions with the gardeners, historical research, poetry and artistic references.

Each month from January to December, pencil drawings and watercolours carried out in situ are enriched by Kathryn’s handwritten notes and observations. The concluding Gallery section reproduces the 25 paintings produced during the residency, showcasing how the artist develops her observational studies and ideas into final artworks.

This book provides a fascinating insight into the evolving natural landscape of the gardens, and their close observation by an artist who became ever more attuned to their shifting moods and seasonal changes. Although a personal record of a specific year, A Brush with the Borders possesses a timeless quality, reflecting the ongoing cycle of the seasons and the importance and relevance of our natural surroundings.

Kathryn Moore studied Fine Art at the University of the South West of England specializing in painting. She has worked abroad resulting in two major solo shows ‘Travelling Light – The Australian Experience’ and ‘Colour Ways – Journeys across continents’ in the UK. Kathryn now lives in Herefordshire; the Welsh border being the predominant subject for her paintings. Visit https://www.kathrynmoore.co.uk/
