Description

As one of the UK’s largest dendrochronology (tree-ring dating) projects to date, the Tilley Timber Project ran from 2015 to 2018 and entailed detailed surveys of 19 buildings in this well-preserved but largely overlooked hamlet in North Shropshire. The project was made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of the local community, and has thrown unprecedented light not only on the individual buildings, but on the history and development of the settlement and its landscape context.

The book provides a detailed account of the project, including descriptions of each of the surveyed buildings, and information on timber-framing techniques, carpenters’ marks and the other research techniques used, such as geophysical survey and LiDAR.

Alastair Reid is a retired Royal Navy pilot, keen historian and the author of a number of books on aviation and local history. He has lived in Tilley since 1997. George Nash is an Associate Professor at the Geosciences Centre of Coimbra University, ITM in central Portugal. He and his family have lived in Tilley since 2010.
