James Wathen was born in Eign Street, in the parish of All Saints, in the city of Hereford in 1751. Originally following his father as a glover, Wathen’s first sketch in the Hereford collections was dated 1779 – the year his father died.
This handsome, slipcased edition features many of Wathen’s paintings and sketches, along with a biographical introduction. Beautifully printed on laid paper, the book offers a record of Wathen’s life and work in Herefordshire. The selection of illustrations used has been chosen with a view to not just covering the county geographically, but also to help tell the story of the transformation that Herefordshire was undergoing at the turn of the eighteenth century. The majority of the sketches were painted in pale washes, but also included are rarer later and darker coloured examples, along with some of his pencil drawings.
This is both an important collection of a talented Herefordshire artist and an insight into the county’s changing landscape.
